PANIC (pan•ik): n. 1. a sudden overpowering terror, often affecting several people at once. 2. a state of unreasonable terror or anxiety over anticipated events. 3. a state that a UNIX kernel enters when critical consistency checks fail and the kernel can no longer operate normally. 4. Physics and Astronomy Network Infrastructure and Computing: your solution to 1, 2, and 3.

Printing

PANIC maintains the departmental public-use printers. We refill paper and toner and perform basic-maintenance in-house, but call authorized repair centers for major service or repairs.

A growing number of faculty have purchased printers for their office or labs. While PANIC can help with basic troubleshooting of network-attached laser printers, the faculty member is responsible for supplies and the cost of any service needed. Under no circumstances will inkjet printers be supported in any fashion.

PANIC supports printing to the departmental print server, kprint.physics.unc.edu, from PANIC-managed machines only. However, we provide instructions for users to set up printing on their personal machines, or non-PANIC-managed machines that are used in research groups. Presently we provide these instructions for printing from: Windows XP, UNIX (most variants), Windows Vista, and Mac OS X 10.3 and 10.4. Printing from versions of Mac OS earlier than Mac OS X 10.3 is not possible. You can find these instructions in the printing HOWTOs section.
